Presenting to you, The Big Fat Indian Wedding Series ! My brother got married earlier this month at an exclusive island on the shores of Goa,India. It was truly a Destination Marriage and one that wont be forgotten anytime soon. We still have compliments just flowing by. I’m glad to take you through this enchanting, divine journey and hope you enjoy it, in the posts to come.
In Marathi, we call all our dear girls as laadkis and what a better time to teach you all, a little Marathi, than now.
As the Day 2 rose, the energies from the last night had surprisingly doubled. Incase you are wondering which last night, have a look at this ,the Day 1 of the wedding series. Now on, the wedding rituals needed to be commenced.
We Indians, sure have long weddings, but the best part of it is that it brings the families from both the sides, together. True that its said, ‘When a girl marries a boy, she actually marries his family’. As Konkanis and GSBs, we have a ‘Devkarya’ which actually means service to God. Here’s how it all started-
The groom and his father are required to wear a traditional dress, ‘soula’ while the mother needs to drape a 9 yard saree. Don’t all these little details give us the real feeling of something special coming up?
I wore a simple, elegant Blue and Orange suit with some pearl jewelry.
A few snaps from the event-
Meanwhile when noone is paying heed to the sister,
Rangoli, coconut, beetle nut, banana leaves are few of the most essential things we Indians need before we start with anything auspicious in the name of God.
This 2 hour ceremony concluded with the start of a fun ritual of Haldi. I think irrespective of caste, each Indian has a Haldi session before marriage. Now haldi basically means turmeric. It was a ritual started as a stress buster for the ones getting married and also to help give a glow to the couple.
The whole ritual is about putting the turmeric over the one getting married, in 5 steps, starting with the feet, knees, waist, shoulder and forehead. All the close ladies have to drench him in turmeric till he’s sparkling yellow and only yellow. You know you are successful when he’s all irritated in the end. Sounds fun? Its much more! Hold on-
Ok, sober yet? Here’s the scene just 10 mins later,
It just gets dirtier and meaner!
That’s about it. So simple. So much fun. We enjoyed this ritual till our hearts sated. We left this poor guy almost naked, till he had to beg us to leave him. Mean girls? That’s a compliment!
So what do you think about the rituals and the wedding by far? Any similarities or differences we have in common? Don’t forget to ping below your views about the whole post.
